What is x402 — in 30 seconds

x402 revives the long-dormant HTTP 402 Payment Required status code into a live payment standard. A typical flow:

1. An AI agent requests a product or service from your server.
2. Your server replies 402 with machine-readable payment terms (price, network, destination).
3. The agent signs a stablecoin payment and retries the request.
4. Payment settles onchain; you get the resource delivered and the agent gets its answer.

No API keys to manage per buyer, no subscription billing, no chargebacks on a micropay. It's the first payment rail designed for the way agents actually transact: small, fast, programmatic.
